Kiefer on the ending of “24″
"This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible, but when all is said and done, it is the loyal worldwide fan base that made it possible for me to have the experience of playing the role of Jack Bauer, and for that I am eternally grateful."

A new statue of Tommy Douglas unveiled in Weyburn has attracted Hollywood star Kiefer Sutherland, the former premier’s grandson.

Speaking before a crowd of at least 150 people, Sutherland insists he has waited a long time to see his grandfather again and thanks to the newly unveiled statue, he has.

Federal NDP leader Jack Layton and provincial party leader Dwain Lingenfelter were also on hand to celebrate the legacy of their party.

People in the crowd may have been drawn in by glow of Sutherland celebrity but the statue of Tommy Douglas itself is also what’s keeping them at the riverside location. Dozens remain lined up to have their picture taken with the likeness one of Weyburn’s most celebrated sons.

Weyburn was once home to Douglas, whose daughter Shirley is Sutherland’s mother. She was not well enough to make the trip.

Actor Kiefer Sutherland was on hand in Weyburn, Sask., Friday for the unveiling of a statue honouring his grandfather, Tommy Douglas.

Douglas, a former premier of Saskatchewan, is credited with introducing universal, publicly funded medical insurance in the province, a precursor to Canada’s national health-care system.

Sutherland, the son of actors Shirley Douglas and Donald Sutherland, participated as a representative of the family.

Despite a steady drizzle and chilling winds, the unveiling on Riverfront Boardwalk attracted hundreds of people — many eager for a glimpse of Sutherland. Some brought DVD copies of 24, hoping for an autograph from the popular television show’s star.

“This has been a desire of mine since I can remember,” said sutherland. “It’s unbelievable. I waited a long time to hold my grandpa’s hand.”
